How to Maintain a Robot Vacuum: Brushes, Filters, Sensors and Mop Pads

A simple maintenance routine for robot vacuums: empty the bin, clear brushes, wash filters, wipe sensors and care for mop pads, with a schedule.

This guide is based on manufacturer specifications, published information and buyer feedback. We do not claim hands-on testing. Always follow the instructions that come with your own robot vacuum.

Robot vacuums are low effort, not no effort. Regular upkeep keeps them cleaning well and helps them last longer.

Maintenance schedule

How often What to do
After each run or as needed Empty the dust bin if the robot has no self-emptying dock
Weekly Cut hair from brushes, wipe sensors and charging contacts, check wheels
Every few weeks Tap or wash the filter as the manual allows, let it dry fully
Mop models Rinse tank and pads, dry them and clean the dock tray
Periodically Replace brushes, filters, pads and bags as recommended

Brushes

Hair wraps around brushes and axles. Remove the brush, cut or pull away hair and clear the bearings. Tangle-resistant designs reduce but do not eliminate this.

Filters

Clean filters keep airflow strong. Some can be rinsed; others should only be tapped or replaced. Never put a wet filter back in.

Sensors and wheels

Dust on cliff and obstacle sensors causes strange behaviour. Wipe them with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Check wheels for hair and debris.

Mop pads and tanks

Wash reusable pads and let them dry to avoid odours. Empty water tanks after use if the manual advises.

Docks and bags

Replace dust bags when the maker recommends, and clean the dock’s air path. Check the cost of bags before you choose a self-emptying model. See self-emptying robot vacuums.

Common problems

See robot vacuum troubleshooting for stuck, not charging and weak suction issues.

Quick weekly routine

  1. Empty the bin or check the dock bag.
  2. Flip the robot over and pull hair from the brush and wheels.
  3. Wipe the sensors and charging contacts.
  4. Check that the dock has clear space around it.

Keep a parts calendar

Note when you last replaced brushes, filters and pads so you can restock before they wear out. Ordering a spare set can save time.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace parts?

Follow the manual. Brushes, filters and pads wear at different rates depending on use and pets.

Can I wash the dust bin?

Many bins can be rinsed, but check your manual and dry everything fully.
