How We Test and Research

We use the same research process for every guide so readers can see how a recommendation was reached. Unless an article states that we tested a product ourselves, our guides are research-based and we do not claim hands-on testing.

What we look at

  • Navigation and mapping. LiDAR, camera or bump navigation, mapping, no-go zones and obstacle avoidance as described by the maker and reported by buyers.
  • Cleaning performance. Stated suction, brush design, carpet handling and what published reviews report.
  • Pets. Brush and hair tangle design, bin size and upkeep for homes with shedding pets.
  • Mopping. Mop type, lift on carpet, water tank and self-cleaning docks.
  • Dock and upkeep. Self-emptying, bag costs, filters, brushes and how often parts need replacing.
  • Privacy and software. Camera and microphone features, app permissions, cloud versus local options and update support.
  • Support and warranty. Warranty length, parts availability and the status of the brand and its app.
  • Value. What the product offers for its price tier. We do not show prices because they change often; check Amazon for current details.

Sources

We draw on manufacturer specification sheets and manuals, published reviews, buyer feedback and community discussion. We link to sources where it helps.

Corrections

If you spot an error, tell us and we will review it. Robot vacuum models change quickly, so we update guides as new models and information appear.
